The 78th Precinct is an actual NYPD precinct that serves the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, and contains Prospect Park.[1] The building it is housed in, on the corners of 6th Avenue and Bergen Street in Brooklyn, New York City is used to represent the fictional 99th Precinct throughout the Brooklyn Nine-Nine television series.

Selection of Precinct[]
Dan Goor loosely based the show’s fictional 99th precinct on Brooklyn’s real-life 78th, one of the most diverse parts of one of the most diverse cities in the word. It’s a fast-gentrifying area that’s home to its share of crime, but also the Brooklyn Nets and yoga classes for babies. Goor knows the area well. He went to high school in Brooklyn, lived there again as a “Late Night With Conan O'Brien” writer, and can tick of the name of the best restaurants and sandwich places in the 78th.[2]
Michael Schur and Dan Goor settled on Brooklyn as a backdrop because of it being such an interesting slice of the world, with its hipsters and its old-school population and its Hasidic population — you have all of these groups that are bumping up against each other, and the cops are right in the middle of it,[3]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The same establishing shot has been used in other television series, such as House and Brooklyn South. Based off this fact it is safe to assume most images of the 78th precinct are stock footage.
- Scenes that take place at the exterior of the 99th precinct were filmed on the New York Street backlot of CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California.
- Scenes that take place in the interior of the 99th precinct were filmed at Stage 12 of CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California.
Trivia[]
- On the night before she was supposed to fly from New York City to Los Angeles to film the pilot, Stephanie Beatriz had her purse stolen. Ironically, she had to go to the 78th precinct in New York to report it was stolen. [4]

And Brooklyn is such an interesting place. It’s so full of characters, and it’s always in transition.”
