Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The character, Rosa Diaz, was originally created for Chelsea Peretti, with the audition calling for a fiery red headed woman named Meghan. Chelsea read for the part and casting’s feedback was that she wasn’t believable as a cop. From there the creators created the civilian administrator role of Gina for Chelsea and the role of “Meghan” remained open.

Stephanie Beatriz’s original audition was for the role of Amy Santiago, as she was the only latina character called for auditions. Casting Director Allison Jones encouraged Stephanie to audition for the character of Meghan instead. When the time came for her callback that was in front of the creators Allison Jones had hair and makeup create her into the character she knew was meant to be.

It wasn’t until Stephanie booked the role of Meghan that the creators informed her they were thinking about changing her character’s name to something soft to juxtapose how tough she is. When she received the script for the Pilot she saw the new name, Rosa Diaz. Beatriz interpreted the name as two great signs from the universe. Her mom's name is Rosario and her previous landlady in New York happened to have the name Mrs. Diaz.[1]

Stephanie Stage 12 Inside

Stephanie Beatriz's caption: Visiting the @brooklyn99 stages at @radfordstudiocenter. So big without our sets in them! I remember leaving those stages on the day we wrapped, knowing that I’d never walk back into them as the same person. And I was right. But it was pretty cool to hold my kid’s little hand, while telling her all about playing Rosa & the pretend city that used to be there.
