Brooklyn Nine-Nine Wiki

A recurring joke on the show since Season Four is Jake being corrected on the pronounciation of Nikolaj Boyle's name.

Season Four[]

The Night Shift[]

  • Jake assures Charles that they would be able to go home before Nikolaj wakes up. Charles then corrects him and they start saying it back and forth until Jake changes the direction of the conversation. (10:22)
  • Jake bids Nikolaj a good-bye, Nikolaj corrects his pronunciation. (13:39)
  • Lohank and Jake talk about Jake's dilemma with Charles' situation. Jake admits he hasn't spent that much time with Nikolaj yet. Lohank corrects him. (19:20)

Mr. Santiago[]

  • After Charles tells Jake to just be himself when he meets Amy's dad, he reacts by saying he hopes he isn't teaching that to Nikolaj. Charles corrects him. (03:48)

Season Six[]

  • Jake tells Charles that he thinks Nikolaj is very lucky to have Charles as his father. Charles interrupts the endearing moment between Jake and him by correcting Jake's pronunciation. They both laugh about it. (20:50)

Season Eight[]

The Last Day Pt 2[]

  • As Jake is telling Charles why he's leaving the Nine-Nine, Charles corrects his pronunciation of Nikolaj, after which Jake says that he was disrupting the moment.

  • Everyone is actually pronouncing Nikolaj wrong, as it is actually meant to be pronounced Neeh-koh-lai. This is due to the Latvian J being pronounced like the English Y.
  • In the Japanese dub of the show (on Netflix), Charles actually does pronounce Nikolaj's name correctly (Neeh-koh-lai) while everyone else says it wrongly.
