In an interview, he explained the differences between the job titles of Staff Writer and Executive Story Editor.
Well, to tell you the truth, there’s not much difference between the two. Everyone contributes to break stories, pitch jokes, write and re-write scripts, etc. If you’ve been on staff longer, there may be more expected of you though. For example, I am now required to creepily massage all new-hires in order to ease them into the job.[1]
He also gave a detailed explanation of the inner workings of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine's writing processes in Season One.
We usually split up into a couple of rooms. One room will be re-writing the current script that’s about to shoot (fixing story issues, coming up with alternate jokes, addressing network notes) and the other room will be breaking or figuring out the next episode. At the same time, one of the writer’s will be off writing a script, and another will be on set with the episode that is currently shooting. But no matter what, at the end of the day, we all meet up for cookies and sex.[1]
