Episode Synopsis[]

Jake and his father deal with unsettled family business. Amy and Rosa work a high-profile case. Terry wants to join the NYPD band.[1]

The episode begins as Holt finishes a morning briefing. He reads a note give to him by Jake, who then enters with Amy to announce the two are having a baby. There's a small reaction, as everyone has figured it out already.

Jake later meets up with his father, Roger Peralta, to invite him to the sex-reveal party. Roger informs Jake that their family has a long history of terrible fathers, and that Roger is still on bad terms with his own dad. At the precinct, Amy and Rosa discover that a small burglary case victim is actually a friend of the mayor, rendering the case important. However, Amy had already given the case to Hitchcock and Scully. Amy and Rosa discover there had been a witness to the crime, but that Hitchcock and Scully forgot to write down the name and contact info. They set out to find the witness but are stopped by Hitchcock and Scully. They inform the girls that the witness was an unregistered immigrant, and had asked not to be written down in fear that he would be detained if he testified.

Elsewhere, Terry is practicing the flute in order to be put onto the NYPD band, which plays in parades. Charles supports his efforts, but Holt thinks the band is terrible. Later, Holt later reveals he actually enjoys the music. He didn't want to help Terry because he thought it would put a strain between them. Terry asks for his help, and Holt drills him so intensely that Terry gets fed up. Later at the auditions, Holt announces to the judges that Terry's perseverance and determination would make him perfect for the band. Terry gets on the band without even auditioning because he was the only flautist who signed up to audition.

At his apartment, Jake is setting up for the party when his grandfather, Admiral Walter Peralta, enters. Jake informs him that Roger doesn't know he's there. When Roger does show up, he takes a swing at Walter and accidentally punches Jake. Roger and Walter argue, Roger calling Walter a terrible father. Jake, saying they're acting like children, uses pages from some of his parenting books to finally settle the tensions. Soon, Walter and Roger are getting along.

Walter tosses Roger a can, who misses and accidentally knocks over Jake and Amy's sex-reveal cake. Jake tries to get everyone to clean it up without looking at the color, but only makes the mess worse. He decides to call Charles, who enlists the three Peralta's into cleaning up and baking a new colored cake. At the sex-reveal party, Amy cuts into the cake to see that the inside is green. Walter and Roger realize they messed up the cake, and quickly blame each other. Walter insults his son and walks out of the party, while Roger accidentally cuts off his right thumb.

At the hospital, Jake worries that his family is cursed and he'll be a bad father. Roger admits that they probably just learned their bad behaviors from each-other. Roger is confident Jake will be a good father. At the precinct the following day, Rosa and Amy "punish" Hitchcock and Scully by giving them one week of paid suspension. Jake apologizes to Amy about the green cake, and makes up for it by buying the two of them a new one. The cake is missing, but Scully enters the room with blue frosting covering his mouth, which reveals that they are having a boy, much to Amy's delight.

  • Holt mentions that he had recently attended a funeral for a fallen officer who was very unpopular. It is possible he is referring to the funeral of Madeline Wuntch, but it is unknown if she is regarded as a fallen officer or if her death was from natural causes.
